About the owner of Fountain Metalworks
Doug Boyd (owner/fabricator) was born and raised in a small town north of Dallas, Texas. Doug’s dedication to his craft is evident in every project, reflecting the ethos of Fountain Metalworks. The journey about befriending new projects is thrilling for Doug.
After graduating high school, Doug decided to audition for “The Greatest Show on Earth” with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. As a result, he earned a coveted spot at the prestigious Ringling Clown College. After 10 ½ weeks of intense training, Doug was on the path to realizing his lifelong dream. Finally, his hard work paid off; he secured a one-year contract to perform with the circus. Doug’s diverse background speaks volumes about his creativity and dedication.
Life On The Road
The dream of being a performance artist would begin his journey deeper into the art world. As he lived his dream, the years flew by, and soon he realized thirteen years of circus life had passed. Doug had both learned and taught others as his career with Ringling Bros. Circus flourished. During those thirteen years, he met, married, and started his family on the road. His children were born into the circus and traveled the country in car #91 of the Ringling Circus train. When his children were two and three years old, he decided about leaving the circus life. And he found work in Las Vegas, Nevada, to provide a more traditional life for them.
In Las Vegas, Doug accepted a position with Cirque du Soleil and a new show called LOVE. Comparatively, Cirque provided a familiar community for him and his family as they began to transition from a life of touring. An unexpected opportunity arose when he learned that Cirque hosted an annual gallery exhibition every year. Cirque performers and employees were invited to enter art or sculptures. He designed and created a reclaimed metal guitar complete with gears and screws…which to his delight sold quickly.
A More Tranquil Life
After several years in Las Vegas, it was time to leave the neon lights for a more serene location. Doug and his family chose Sedona, Arizona where nature and art were one with the community. He soon found the creative energy about Sedona to inspire beyond what he could have imagined. He received his first commissioned metal sculpture, a spaceship for a local restaurant called The Red Planet Diner. Sedona was instrumental in shaping Doug’s artistic journey.
Although thriving and loving Sedona, he and his family decided to step into a simpler life for a while. He purchased a retired school bus which he completely remodeled into a home for his family. They spent five years in the school bus home living near the creek in Sedona in a peaceful, serene community.
In 2009, Doug found his way to Phoenix, Arizona where he opened his metal shop. Although his attention is directed to creating custom art and water features for clients throughout the United States. The first few years, he primarily designed and produced functional art like, metal barn doors, desks, and industrial-style lighting.
